The Little Miss and Mr Men books by Roger Hargreaves were some of my favourite picture books when I was little. Etched in my mind are the colourful illustrations of Mr Tickle, Mr Bump and Little Miss Sunshine dancing across the pages and getting caught up in all sorts of mischief. But, I’d completely forgotten just how good a read they actually are and what a lovely addition they can make to any child’s bookshelf.
Little Miss Hug is the latest to our collection, and the perfect choice if you want something heartwarming.
This little gem is like a hug in a book. Soothing, calming and enough story to feel like a satisfying key stage 1 read.
Synopsis
“Thoughtful, affectionate, lovely. More than anything else, she loves to hug her friends and make them feel better. Everyone needs a hug, don’t they?”
The story follows Little Miss Hug and her perfectly timed hugs. Her extra special arms fit around allsorts of friends, whether they are in need of a pick-me-up hug, a squeeze because they’ve been hurt or to celebrate a special occasion.
But, she soon finds that not everyone is so keen!
When Little Miss Hug tries to hug away Mr Grumpy’s bad mood she finds that he doesn’t want one. Little Miss Hug’s friends have never refused one of her hugs before!
Mr Grumpy is convinced that no amount of hugging could ever change how he feels, but Little Miss Hug is determined to prove him wrong.
And of course there’s a happy ending!
“Very slowly, My Grumpy smiled. For the first time in his life, he was happy.”
We love Little Miss Hug! It’s a lovely, warm and delightful read. The short snappy sentences make it a great read-out-loud story, but also manageable for little readers to take in at their own leisure.
If you look a little closer, woven into the story is the idea that hugs can make you feel happy, which we know is actually true. Hugs are fantastic at reducing stress and helping to make us feel connected to each other. It’s a lovely one to show little ones empathy in action, and that sometimes, all you need is a little hug to set things right again.
Happy reading!
Little Miss Hug is available to buy from all good bookshops. If you haven’t seen the Official Mr Men and Little Miss website, it’s definitely worth a visit.

We love the Mr Men books, my kids got the whole set one year and we still have them all. This one sounds fab. They are such classics!
Here’s a fun fact: my (late) grandpa worked with Roger Hargreaves on a newspaper where my grandpa was a sub & Roger drew the cartoons. When my grandpa retired Roger drew him a picture featuring all the people in their office as Mr Men characters with my grandpa at the front. It’s now framed and hanging on my mum & dad’s stairs! #mischiefandmemories
Oh wow! What an amazing story and how special to have a drawing like that xx

Interesting how being away from books of this age level for a while changes your perspective. My kid is ten in a few weeks and when you talked about people not wanting hugs I instantly went to thoughts of consent and touching without permission. Anyway, this sounds super cute I just thought it was interesting where my mind went as the parent of an older kid. Thanks for hosting #mischiefandmemories
We LOVE a Mr Man book here and WILD is currently ranking higher that that here right #mischief and Memories.
