35 garden activity ideas for children

June 5, 2021

Did you know that today is World Environment Day and this week is National Children’s Gardening Week?

There are so many ‘days’ to remember lately, aren’t there? Sometimes I wonder whether some of the trivial ones just add extra (loud) noise in our already choc-a-block parent-lives. But, these two really are fab for popping into the calendar for little ones.

The beauty of these awareness days are that they are all about getting outside, considering the environment, and nurturing the space that we have around us so we can all thrive. Here are 35 garden activity ideas for children that you can do at home that embrace these lovely awareness days in your own way.

  1. These are such great garden activities – we’ve done quite a few of them but you’ve given me a few more ideas for activities. I like the idea of creating a living wall. I hadn’t heard of National Children’s Gardening Week until recently and it sounds like such a good idea to help encourage children to get involved in the garden. #MischiefandMemories

  2. Last night I gave my grands bug nets and parmesan cheese containers, and they had fun chasing bugs!

  3. My boys liked to dig for worms in the garden #mischirgandmemories@_karendennis

  4. Kirsty Hall says:

We spend a lot of time in our little London garden and love getting ideas for what we can do. Having the kids help with growing plants always goes down a treat as does looking for bugs #MischiefAndMemories

  5. Lydia C. Lee says:

Great ideas. We are big flower planters and watch them bloom….#Mischiefandmemories

  6. We once made birds nest and I put normal eggs in and left overnight and as if by magic they hatched into little toy chicks- that was great fun! Number 18 reminded me that there used to be a huge willow tree with a den underneath on a nearby field when I was younger- we may have to go on an adventure to see if it’s still there!

What a fantastic list, my boys love watching bugs x #mischiefandmemories

  8. I love the idea of making a birds nest, I can remember wanting to this as a child but don’t think I ever did, definitely going to see if one of my children fancies it, might just do it by myself if they don’t! #mischiefandmemories

We have been doing a fairly small garden for a couple of years. Small because where we live, I typically call “the edge of the desert” and watering is tricky on 100+ degree days. My husband likes HOT peppers, while I prefer squash and zucchini. Thanks for these ideas.

Love all these ideas – mine love counting bees & it’s amazing how many there are when you look! #mischiefandmemories
