“Curious little minds will love Dilwyn The Welsh Dragon!”
An exclusive partnership between The Royal Mint and publishing house Owlet Press brings us a magical picture book series about The Royal Mint, a welsh dragon and some pretty fabulous tooth fairies!
Dilwyn The Welsh Dragon by Samuel Langley-Swain is the first in the series of this wonderful collection and it’s here that little ones first get a glimpse behind the scenes of The Royal Mint and meet Dilwyn.
“In the valleys of Wales, everyone at The Royal Mint is hard at work, making coins. But one night, a baby red dragon hatches from a magical egg! The makers name him Dilwyn and take care of him until he’s big enough to guard their coins. Every night Dilwyn sleeps high up in the rafters keeping watch; until two robbers foolishly try to break in…”
Dilwyn The Welsh Dragon starts off by introducing little readers to The Royal Mint and how coins are made. It’s fascinating stuff, and just when you least expect it, a magical rainbow coloured egg appears amongst the coins!
Then out pops… Dilwyn!
How cute is he?
The coin makers take good care of Dilwyn, who lives at The Royal Mint and over time he becomes guard of the coins.
One night two pesky robbers get more than they had bargained for when they come face to face with Dilwyn. Ekk!! But not to worry, of course Dilwyn saves the day. Hooray!
Dilwyn The Welsh Dragon is a gorgeous rhyming picture book which gently takes little ones on Dilwyn’s journey from egg to fully fledged dragon royalty. It’s a lovely read-out-loud story for any occasion, and also short enough to be a rewarding read for key stage 1 children. Whether they are reading out loud to you, or just to themselves, this is going to be a winner.
The illustrations are beautiful and oh-so colourful – particularly capturing the kind spirit of Dilwyn so well, even when he’s warding off the robbers with his fiery breath and burning the robbers bottoms in a laugh out loud moment.
We love that it’s one of those stories that little ones can get lost in the magic of, and then at the very end find out that parts of the story are real.
What a fantastic start to an exciting series!
We’ve also reviewed The Tooth Fairy And The Home Of The Coin Makers and The Tooth Fairy And The Magical Journey here if you’d like to find out more.
The series is available to buy directly from Owlet press, The Royal Mint and most well known bookstores.

Dilwyn is so cute! Is this similar to the fairies book in collaboration in the Royal Mint? I’m definitely going to keep them in mind for when my daughter approaches the tooth losing phase 🙂 #mischiefandmemories
