Its wedding season. Yay! The perfect excuse to go shopping for something lovely to wear.
As a larger mum, I tend to dip in an out of good plus sized retailers for different items. However, if you pick the right style for you, then there is no reason why you can’t plumb for a standard cut outfit, just in a larger size. Now don’t worry, I hear you. Not every store stocks or goes past size 18. But these days there are some great online retailers that do! I’ve been on the lookout for an outfit that’s pretty AND comfortable to wear to a summer wedding. Possibly a tall order? Yes. But I think I’ve cracked it!
No matter how pretty a pair of shoes are, if they are not comfortable, there’s no way I’m going to wear them to a wedding. There’s usually lots of standing, dancing and then of course the (mum) running after little ones to be done throughout the day, so something with a sensible heel is always a good start.
*Unless you are queen of high heels, that is, and if you are, I take my hat off to you and want to know your secret!
For a summer wedding, I do love a pair of flat sandals. In fact, I actually wore flat sandals to my own wedding! They tend to be super easy to colour match to outfits and look on trend with either trouser, skirt suits or dresses of all lengths.
These beauties from JD Williams are deliciously comfortable! And I don’t’ say that lightly.
The sole is super soft and cushioned making these perfect for wearing all day (and night). I love the little gold four leaf clover detailing which winks a little good luck to the bride and groom.

Finding a lovely dress to wear to a wedding when you are plus sized doesn’t seem like an easy task at first glance. Some retailers do get it horribly wrong and you risk looking like you’ve come in fancy dress… as a tent. Then there’s that mental battle of comfort over style. Bodycon dresses can look amazing, but depending on your figure, once you’ve added all the necessary structured underwear, you might look amazing, but feel like a trust up chicken.
For a summer wedding, that has to be a no, no for me. But I’ve found this! What do you think?
It’s lining is in a jersey material so there’s lots of give in the fabric and the floaty layers waft beautifully over lumps and bumps! It does need a full slip, to avoid showing off your outline, but as the dress is so light and airy, you don’t really notice the extra layer.
I love the slashed floaty sleeves that give you a bit of coverage in the… erm chicken wing area.
The colour is a delicate blush, overlaid with a pretty floral print, which adds to drawing your eye away from all the wobbly bits. I’m 5’3 and the length is quite demure, so there will be absolutely no knicker flashing while I’m on parent duty. The only thing I’ve found is that the proportions at the top are a little bit too generous, so I’m going to have it taken in just a touch, to avoid flashing any boob!

And finishing touches?
I’ve always loved the look of fascinators. They can finish off an outfit beautifully and are a perfect alternative to wearing a hat. If you go big, they can also help to balance your proportions out a bit. As a fascinator newbie, this delicate but large grey fascinator feels amazing to wear. And it’s subtle colour could work with many outfits.

I am not a hat person at all so always choose a fascinator. I love the floaty fabric of the dress and the way the layers hang prettily. I have a wedding in less than a month and still no idea what to wear!

It does seem when I see articles on wedding dresses and outfits it is for the ‘perfect’ size people. Very rarely though are people that perfect size. So refreshing to read an article about wedding outfits for normal people.

That dress looks lovely on you! I’m a fan of a heel for a wedding (I even wore heels to my own when I was 7 months pregnant) BUT I have an amazing pair of gold flipflops that roll up into a little pouch. They normally save my feet for the evening do and dancing! #DreamTeam
