Summer holiday fun – free open air gallery at Regents Park, London

July 22, 2019

It’s always good fun getting out and about to the local museums and galleries in the school holidays isn’t it? But, how about an open air gallery?

I think there’s something a bit special about interacting with art in a natural environment. You don’t have to keep to hushed voices, and there’s little direction in how you take in the views. Perfect for little ones who love to explore, chatter and well…. just be little!

The English Gardens in Regents Park, London have recently been transformed into a stunning, green open air gallery, perfect for families. And… it’s totally free. Yass! I popped in to take a look around in my lunch break. Here’s what I found.

Frieze Sculpture open air gallery

The Frieze Sculpture open air gallery is an annual event at Regents Park in London. This year it’s featuring more than 20 international artists who are ready to capture viewers hearts and imaginations. Taking them on a wonderful trail that will excite and fascinate in a gallery without walls.

I love the printable family trail guide that’s available to download here for free. I didn’t have Little Button with me when I visited, but I know that it’s something that would keep her entertained and eager on the trail. There’s also a free audio tour that you can access via an app. I haven’t tried this yet, but it’s on my list to do in the coming weeks!

One thing that really stuck out about the exhibition (apart from the amazing sculptures) is how relaxed it was.

People were picnicing by the artworks. Sitting, taking it all in. Children were running in between giant pieces. Other’s, studious, reading every word that was available to glean more information from.

It was able to attract and enchant everyone in so many different ways.

My overall thoughts

I was impressed. Each year’s collection brings something else to the table, but for some reason this particular work felt more accessible and family friendly. I’ll definitely be back on my own to hear the audio tour. And, I’ll be back again, bringing Little Button for a picnic with the most incredible view.

Fancy a visit?

Frieze Sculpture is showcasing in Regents Park, London from the 3rd July to the 6th October 2019. It’s located in the English gardens, close by to where all the flowers and fountains are. And, it’s completely free!

If you’re going with little ones, it’s worth noting that there are toilets by the Marylebone Green Playground in Regents Park, not too far from the English Gardens. We’ve not been there yet, but I’ll be popping by soon to let you know what it’s like.

And, a bit further on you’ll find a pretty coffee shop that also has toilets (I think you need 20p for these).

Enjoy!

Pin me for later 😉
