To mark the first day of the Christmas holidays we had an impromptu baking day in our brand new kitchen! We were very kindly sent a Honeywell Biscuit Co. Chocolate reindeer cake kit by Wren Kitchens, which contained just about everything needed for the bake off. Thank you!
We started off by watching a fabulous Instagram live bake along with Alix Carey from My Kitchen Drawer. If you love baking, make sure you check out Alix’s blog – it’s heaven.
We loved how down to earth and easy-going Alix came across, not to mention her gorgeous new kitchen! She went through the bake step-by-step so we could easy see what we needed to do – she definitely swept away any doubts of a mega #bakingfail.
Inside our baking kit we found all the ingredients to make the cake (with exception to the eggs, milk and butter), a baker’s hat and a fun baking themed crossword.
Armed with both a simple instruction card and Alix’s live bake along we had just watched, we excitedly got started.
Little Button was able to pretty much do everything herself. #Winning. The little packs of ingredients were zip lock opening ones, making them very easy for little fingers to open.
It didn’t take her long to have the cake mixture ready to be popped into the oven!
Once the chocolate cake was ready, we left it to cool and set about making the chocolate buttercream. #Yum
Again, the simple instructions and the way the ingredients were packaged made everything that much easier. We ended up with a lot of buttercream! But that just added to all the tasty fun.
Little Button iced the top of our cooled cake and I then carefully cut it into 6 generous reindeer slices.
We decided to pop it into the fridge for 5 mins to help it set, before decorating with candy eyes, noses and pretzels for antlers.
We love how Christmassy it looks, and yes, it was absolutely delicious.
We were so impressed by the kit, so I did a bit of digging around and found it’s actually available as a Young Bakers Club subscription box. And, also sold as individual boxes too by Honeywell Biscuit Co.
If you can’t get a delivery in time for Christmas, then it’s completely possible to make a normal chocolate or Victoria sponge cake and top it with chocolate frosting – then decorate from there!
I am going to follow this and make it with the grandchildren #dreamteam@_karendennis
I love that you call it reindeer cake!
