I love My Bike by Simon Mole and Sam Usher – picture book review

June 12, 2021

A bell-twanging read for any little one learning to ride their bike!

Learning to ride a bike for the very first time, and then learning to ride without stabilisers too is a big thing for any little one (or grown up…I might add *it’s true, I’m a bike wobbler still!). It’s something to be celebrated, but the journey from wobble to whizzer isn’t always a smooth ride, as we find out in the fabulous I Love My Bike by Simon Mole and Sam Usher.

Fast, snappy and exhilarating.

Synopsis

There’s a flame on the frame

and I love how it feels

from my head to my heels

when my feet push the pedals

and the pedals turn the wheels.

I love my bike.

I Love My Bike follows the outdoor adventures of a little girl and her dad as she learns to ride her bike. We love the lyrical text and her positivity is just so infectious as she describes her bike with the “flame on the frame” and “it’s red so it’s fast” before she’s even touched the pedals.

We know she’s keen to give it a really good try, and there’s a sense of her willing herself to be able to ride her bike. But, as like lots of first goes at things, it doesn’t quite go to plan.

Championed and comforted by dad, she tries again. And then again… and her determination finally rewards her with a beautiful view of the world she’s not noticed before.

The playfully placed text and beautifully emotive illustrations take you on the little girls initially wobbly bike journey, to being whooshed at a terrific speed along with her for the ride!

Hold on tight!

Our overall thoughts

I Love My Bike by Simon Mole and Sam Usher is a fun and fast paced, read out loud story that little ones are going to want to read again and again. The idea is simple, but the clever wording and pacing has a way of pulling you along, bumps and all, so you relive that exhilarating moment of letting go and really loving your bike.

It’s a fantastic find, and one I wish I had had on our little ones book shelf for when she first learnt to ride her bike. We would absolutely recommend this read.

I Love My Bike is published by Frances Lincoln Children’s Books and was recently released on the 8th June. It is available from all good bookstores.

  6. This would be perfect for Iris, she mastered her balance bike with such speed and confidence but the move to a pedal bike has really dampened her enthusiasm for riding.

Oh I could have done with this book recently as one of the twins really struggled to ride without stabilisers and she was getting down about it as her sister got it so quickly, but I am very happy and proud to say she nailed it this week!! #MischiefAndMemories
