We love finding unusual places to eat out. Which, to be honest, isn’t that hard in London. But I swear my heart skipped a beat (or 3) when we found this! The Krispy Kreme diner.
I’m sure there must be a few of these dotted around, but for some reason they have completely eluded us all. Well, that is until now! This one is tucked away in Enfield in the outskirts of North London.
There’s a modest car park AND a drive-through! Yes. A real drive-through like McDonalds. Someone pinch me, because drive-through and donuts in the same sentence just make way too much sense. We’d already committed to parking (free) so on this occasion it would have to wait. *But it didn’t stop me from running through on foot to have a closer look, much to Little Buttons amusement (and Mr Buttons horror LOL!).
So, once we eventually made it through the door I couldn’t believe how spacious it was. Almost too spacious, as if half the seating may have been removed. I’m not complaining! There were plenty of tables and seats for everyone to sit down in. Perhaps they use the space for events which would of course explain it. *Mind gets carried away with ideas of extravagant Krispy Kreme parties.
But anyway. We LOVED the cool American diner feel. The pink girly spin chairs stole Little Buttons heart so much that she almost missed the other view! The most important view. The view of hundreds of Krispy Kreme’s being made right before our eyes.
Yes. This isn’t an ordinary donut diner! It’s one that proudly showcases behind the scenes so you can see exactly how Krispy Kreme donuts come to be.
The clever glass window allows you to watch donut mixture being loaded into moulds, then baked whilst travelling through a funny vertical rotating oven. Then, onto being dunked (deep fried) to give them the Krispy hallmark taste, drained, aired, and gathered up ready for the decorators to do their thing! The process is fascinating and slightly mesmerising.
All the bakers were smiley and not phased at all by the sight of our eager faces pressed up against the glass following a specific donut round to see what happened to it.
We decided to treat ourselves to drinks and a Krispy Kreme donut each. Tasty is an understatement! Of course, after being baked right there, they were naturally going to be the freshest Krispy Kreme donuts we had ever tasted, and quite possibly enhanced by the sweet scent that hung like candy floss in the air.
It’s a big gooey thumbs up from us. What a fab place to grab dessert whilst watching it being made.
If you fancy a trip to a Krispy Kreme diner, check out their website to see if you’re lucky enough to have one near you. I’m not sure if they all have behind the scenes viewing galleries so it’s worth calling ahead to avoid disappointment.
