The Fib by Pedro Iniguez and Nathan Kwan – picture book review

May 9, 2025

I LOVE a good sneak peek of up coming picture books, don’t you? When I got the chance to have a look at The Fib by Pedro Iniguez and Nathan Kwan, publishing later in October 2025, I couldn’t wait. It’s a brilliant new story about the importance of honesty. – Love this message.

Picture book, aimed at 3 – 8 year olds. *However, I think that grown ups and older children will also love the story!

About the story

It’s show and tell at school and Pepe HAS brought something with him. A comic book he’s spent all summer making.

But, after comparing his comic book to what other children have brought in, Pepe makes up a fib, and pretends he’s brought a special pet to school instead.

His special pet starts out as a ball of lint. But, with each fib he tells, his pet Fib grows. Ekkk!!!

Isn’t Pepe’s fib cute! We love how illustrator Nathan Kwan has captured the feel of it. The Fib does start off as a very sweet little magical creature, but soon evolves into an out of control naughty monster! Who, starts to get very hungry!

Just when Pepe has completely lost control of the Fib, and it looks like the children might become it’s lunch… Mrs Apple steps in to help. Phew!!!

With a bit of help from Mrs Apple (love the teachers name!), Pepe soon learns that the only way to make the Fib go away is to tell the truth. And as he does, it slowly, and very sweetly disappears. Hooray! The story ends with all the feels, as Pepe decides to make another comic book, inspired by the Fib.

Our overall thoughts

Imaginative, fast paced, and SO deliciously fun! – 100% a 5 star read.

I can’t stop smiling about this picture book. It’s got everything in abundance… a clever message, lots of fun along the way, and the all important takeaway message – the importance of honesty and how little fibs can grow out of control.

It’s a lot of fun to read out loud, and the striking illustrations make it exceptionally memorable. We especially like the evolution of the Fib, and love how it goes from being super cute to quite a scary monster – reflective of an out of control lie.

There are so many stand out moments, from the honestly of children, “That sounds like a fib,” said Tommy. “Yes,” said Pepe, not knowing what the word meant. To Mrs Apple saying “Pepe, tell your Fib to behave!” – love it! And the poignant “I’m sorry for telling a fib. I didn’t know it could hurt people.”

I imagine loads of parents will be having a good old giggle along with this book, while wide eyed little ones will be gasping in utter delight. Even my 12 year old was gripped!

Love it! Definitely one that will be read over and over again.
