My latest children’s book Me in the Middle (published by Owlet Press and illustrated by Angela Mayers) is a celebration of how families can be made up in so many different ways, with each one being truly special. It features some wonderful family trees, and even has one which looks like my own! We were thinking of how we could make our own family tree as a kids craft, and came up with a little cheeky twist to make a Lego inspired family tree model.
We had a Lego bonsai tree ready and built, however, you could use any coloured Lego bricks to create your own tree shape. If you don’t have Lego, you could use building blocks, Duplo or something like stickle bricks.
You will need:
Step 1
Build a tree out of your Lego!
Step 2
Draw out your family members to go on your family tree. Take your time… the more detail, the better. Tip: We stuck to 3 generations to make sure that we could fit them onto our tree.
Step 3
Add a bit of colour and then cut out each family member.
Step 4
Assemble your family tree! We looped a piece of magic tape to create a double sided bit of tape. Next, we stuck one side to a family member and pressed this directly onto the Lego.
Ta-dah! It’s so easy, and can be tweaked for different ages too. As part of this activity, we read Me, in the Middle and talked about the makeup of our own family, which is of mixed heritage, just like in the book.

That’s a fun way to create a family tree and talk about families together. We’ve done a family tree to help with learning French words for family but I like the idea of doing a family tree with Lego. Lovely pictures too. #DreamTeam
